image to show diversityPresident Donald Trump’s recent executive actions to eradicate affirmative action, diversity and inclusion programs, and transgender protections at the federal level leaves in its wake a tsunami of PR crises in the making.

Private businesses, corporations, educational and nonprofit organizations throughout America are left stunned with how to address their diversity practices, DEI language, and workforce inclusion initiatives – not to mention lack of funding in some cases.

Trump’s DEI order, for example, directs federal agencies and departments to end all equity-related grants and contracts. It includes sweeping recommendations for “the private sector” to end discrimination and preferences that include not only diversity, equity and inclusion but also accessibility.

Trump’s order regarding biological classification of one’s gender or sex seeks to exclude certain protections of transgender, nonbinary and intersex individuals.

CEOs, human resource managers and employees alike are on edge about the fallout from these executive orders, ranging from confusion on current HR policies to lack of federal funding to mental well-being of staff.

It’s time to review your PR plan and communications messaging for both internal employee, human resources and stakeholder audiences, as well as external customers and media to manage potential issues.

  • Can you properly communicate the humanitarian mission and values of your organization to your employees and other target publics, should those you serve be directly or indirectly affected by these executive orders?
  • Should your PR language remain politically neutral and non-emotionally charged, or not and do you have a strategy for this?
  • Do you have a plan in place to manage public and employee relations about these issues in your workplace?
