image of American flagPresident Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the border, the end of birthright citizenship, mass deportations, and denying public benefits to unauthorized immigrants can impact many nonprofit organizations, small businesses, tech companies, and corporations throughout America.

CEOs, hiring managers and employees are on edge about the fallout from these executive orders, ranging from potential “raids” and reduced federal funding, to loss of productivity, supply chain disruptions and mental well-being of staff.

Any one of these issues is reason to call in professional help with public relations strategies and tactics.

It’s time to review your PR plan and communications messaging for both internal employee, human resources and stakeholder audiences, as well as external customers and media to manage potential issues or disruptions. Should your organization be subject to a Department of Homeland Security audit, inspection or raid, the time is now to be prepared with crisis statements and procedures for managing this potential reality.

The time to plan for your PR crisis is not when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are at your door.

If you are planning to hire, verify or already have any undocumented employees on your staff, or those who are here on the H-1B visa program, it’s time to ensure your human resource managers are reviewing their written policies and documenting I-9 compliance. It would also behoove you to engage the help of an employment attorney to assist and provide legal counsel to uncover any potential violations in compliance that could result in financial penalties.

  • Should a raid happen at your company, will customers and the public at large assume your business is considered a security or safety threat?
  • Can you properly communicate the humanitarian mission and values of your organization to your employees and other target publics, should those you serve be directly or indirectly affected by any of these executive orders?
  • Should your PR language remain politically neutral and non-emotionally charged, or not and do you have a strategy for this?
  • Do you have a plan in place to manage public and employee relations during and after a potential audit or raid on your workplace?

If you need help drafting media or employee statements, developing a crisis communications plan, opinion editorial, articles, or news releases, or simply need third-party “outside” strategic counsel to guide your internal team to implement, contact Betty Galligan at betty@newberrypr.com, call 401-433-5965 or use our contact form below.
